Arriving at the front door at any time of day or night you might stumble into a huge and terrifying dragon's head, rearing up at you, from which would pop an artist with needle and thread; or find a group of boffins crowding around a half built creature struggling with controls as they coaxed it into a walk, like anxious parents witnessing a child's first steps. The technology is more powerful now and less unique, as computers dominate the world of film fantasy and the expectations of the audiences grow more critical. I have for the better part of the two decades been an avid fan of the syndicated television show Charles in Charge. As far as sitcoms go it is remembered fondly among people my own age but more for nostalgia and is often ignored in discussions of the best sitcoms. It is not taken seriously, however it has many hilarious moments even in the episodes with tired sitcom plots you have seen in countless other shows from the 80s. The show also has what may be my favorite TV joke of all time. There is an episode where Charles, while trying to write a research paper on mental illness, is mistakenly admitted and kept in a mental hospital. His best friend Buddy (newly released himself) runs back to Charles' residence where dives over the table containing a telephone, frantically grasping at the phone book. He begins flipping through the yellow pages with a furious urgency and shouts;
"Quick, what's the number for 911?"
This is a landmark joke.

It works on two levels: The first is the observational fact that we refer so often to the emergency number it is thought of more as a description then a number. You could almost see how in a panicked mood you might momentarily forget the fact that 911 is in fact a phone number. The second level the audiences familiarity with Buddy Lembeck as an idiot. It is funny to see Buddy, (who once, while cooking scooped up a fistful of Crisco and ate it) make a mistake like that and so the audience is rewarded twice on one joke.

I flatly do not know why I do as I do. For I do not enjoy the strips. I read them solemnly and sourly, and there is no delight in me because of them. That is, I had no delight and no enjoyment and no love until Barnaby came. I think, and I am trying to talk calmly, that Barnaby and his friends and oppressors are the most important additions American arts and letters in Lord knows how many years.

Roald the Rotten Part 2

By the way, part 2 of Roald the Rotten has been just about finished for a few months now. I just need to print it out and put it together. I will be selling parts 1 and 2 along with 2 brand new comics at the MoCCA festival on April 9th and 10th. More on that as the date gets closer.

Proposed casting for a live action G.I. Joe movie (early 90s version)

I think we can all agree the recent live action G.I. Joe movie was pretty awful. Part of the reason for it's failure was poor casting. If a movie had been made in the early 90s when the cartoon was fresh in every one's mind, producers of that movie would have available a cast most movies dream of. See my suggestions below:

In an, admittedly, bold choice I would select Dave Coulier for the role of Duke. I believe he has the combo of wholesome attitude and leadership to handle this role.

Underrated character actor Gary Grubbs would make a perfect Cross Country.

Lou Gossett Jr as Roadblock, obviously.

Peter Deluise would be able to get into the scenery chewing role of Cobra henchman Torch.

Eric Stoltz would be able to make a genuinely frightening Zartan

The multi-talented Steve Earle would make a chilling Monkeywrench.

Screen legend Robert Duvall has the depth and poignancy needed for the role of Beach Head.

How about a sultry, early 90s Madonna as the evil Baroness?

Another no-brainer. Julia Roberts as Scarlett

Home Improvement's Richard Karn would be a great Shipwreck!

Action star Lou Diamond Phillips as the karate master Quick Kick.

A Home Alone era John Heard, could make the otherwise forgettable character Lifeline memorable.

Denzel as Doc. Need i say more?

And finally utility infielder Tom Brookins of the Detroit Tigers as Bazooka.

When we were teenagers but before we could drive, my friend Lawrence and I walked from one end of our town to the other to get between friends houses when neither of our moms could pick us up. I was taking trumpet lessons at the time and carried mine with me the whole hour plus walk - it was a source of inspiration for a song we made up along the way. I can not remember the whole thing but i remember the chorus involved rhyming "trumpet" with "tea and crumpets" (we share an obsession with civilized British people). The night before we graduated high school, Lawrence, myself and two of our other friends spent the better part of it smashing mailboxes with road blocks and, at one point, other mailboxes. This adventure was short lived because we got pulled over on Main Street, separated and interrogated by the Ridgefield Police. My memory is hazy from this night but at some point i "folded like a deck of cards" (as a friend later put it) and admitted it was us who smashed the mailboxes. Lawrence is still upset with me about this, but i think we have gotten busted anyway given the fact we had an orange safety cone in full view in the trunk of the car. All we got were tickets anyway. It is a good thing i did not watch shows like Law and Order or The Wire when i was in high school, or else i would have known about plea bargaining. I am pretty sure i could have not only gotten out of paying the ticket, but put my friend Ryan Barr in jail for life.
Another illegal but less destructive thing we did - with two different friends - was jump in every public pool in our town in one night. In each pool we left a calling card of sorts, a piece of cardboard with "ABBC" written on it (the first initial of each of our last names). This was a pathetic attempt to get into the legendary Ridgefield Police Log in our local paper. We hoped each pool would notice this piece of cardboard floating the following morning and call the police. The police, their suspicions aroused by a flood of calls involving "ABBC" signs in public pool would be certain it was a gang and make it a top priority to rub us out. Nothing ever got noticed. And if we did this sort of thing now, in a post 9-11, atmosphere, people still would not care.

Anyway here are a few movies Lawrence and I made sometime between singing about tea and crumpets over the roar of traffic on Route 7 and climbing over chainlink fences, soaking wet at 2 in the morning.

There are two types of pain my teeth endure. One happens, among other times, when i floss after having not flossed in a while. It is deep throbbing pain, felt mainly in my gums, that i actually enjoy. It starts where my teeth meet my gums and moves almost in waves up to my lips. It could start on the inside of my lips too. In a canker sore that I'll suck through my teeth then bite on to create this odd sensation. If i have not flossed in a real long time the pain is made more real by tiny drops of blood i can see in between my teeth created by the peppermint flavored string cutting into my dainty pink gums. I will usually savor this pain till my eyes water and then slowly let it fade down to nothing.

The other pain is one i do not enjoy. It is a sharp, sudden stab in a single tooth. It can happen when i breath in cold air or bite into food, with no rhyme reason and little (if any) warning. It is worsened, not helped by dentists scraping at my teeth with their uniquely horrible tool. When I was a teenager a dentist, demonstrating how decayed a part of my tooth was, stuck this tool in the tooth and, removing her hand, left it there. Often while scraping they will scrape to far and to fast, creating more drops of blood and more pierced pink gums. This pain cannot be savored as it it comes to quickly, to unexpected and it fades to fast

While I enjoyed Stalker, i found my head thoroughly scratched due to the final scene. Did the girl have supernatural powers or were those glasses merely moved by the rumble of the passing train? The film open with a glass being moved by a train, which, in retrospect, leaves one to wonder...
A possibility i have toyed with, little discussed on the Internet, is the idea of these powers being the result of her father's great desire. Remember both Stalker and Writer leaned into The Room momentarily when Writer lost his balance. Could one of them wished this for the girl? Do you have to step fully into the Room in order for it's powers to work. It's a long movie and not without it's slow spots for sure, but i found it quite worth the effort. I most was surprised at the humor and the effective way it created tension out of absolutely nothing. I think Shamaylan's The Happening owes a great debt to this movie. Upon thinking more about it i realized it reminded me of a Becket play with one crucial difference - a payoff at the end. The endless talking, little explained characters and bizarre environments did not bother me due to the fact they had an ending which lived in that world. Not some pointless, boring Beckett-style shite.

In all a big thumbs up for Stalker. If you have a spare 2 hours and 40 minutes, check it out and get back to me.

Readers of this blog are probably very curious as to how i feel about the Post Office on Varick St. The answer? Not to shabby! I have been working in this neighborhood for lo these two months now and have become quite familiar with this branch of the united states postal service. And if you think i am some noob when it comes to judging post offices, think again my friend. I measure all new york post offices i enter against, both, a standard of excellence (Grand Central Post Office) and inadequacy (Williamsburg Post Office).

If you see this post office in your neighborhood turn the other way. Don't take my word for it read these reviews, surely written by people with faces fixed in masks of unamusement... possibly blind rage.

I know my many (2) readers are also wondering what i think of all the Late Night Talk Show changes happening. I'll save that for another post...

Comics I got in India

Calcutta has at least one big American bookstore on College street. I know this because i went there nearly every day i was there. Not just for this bookstore, it was the street in Calcutta that most reminded me of New York and so when i would go for a walk i would more likely then not find myself walking towards this street of bookstores, coffee shops and universities. Finding local comic books in these stores is a lost cause however. The comics they did carry were in English and of internationally popular characters like Tin Tin or Asterix. To find comics in Hindi i search the book stalls on every street in Calcutta. The stalls are shops about the size of my bedroom here in brooklyn. They have just three walls lined with books. You enter where the fourth wall would be, often an older men is sitting on the floor ready to convince you to enter his shop in broken english, if you even slightly slo your pace while walking past. It was in one of these shop i found this, which i later found was by a Bombay artist.

In another shop i found an issue of Superman, entirely in Hindi, but the cover was so water marked and dust covered i decided not to haggle with the dealer and not buy it.
Below are pages from an artist i discovered through the help of my friend Saptarshi, whom i met while drawing in the Seldah Train Station in Calcutta. He told me about comic book artist, Debnath Narayana who is from Calcutta and very popular in India. according to wikipedia he is a bit of a recluse, which seems impossible to me in Calcutta.

Finally i found this picture book in a bookstore in Sikkim.

It was one of many cool picture books made by G.S. Subrananyan. Like many of the things i bought while over there, i should have bought about 8 of these...
